Ingredients

For the Calzones
  • 1 lb Pizza dough (store-bought or homemade) divided into 4 pieces
  • 1.5 cups Mozzarella cheese shredded, low-moisture
  • 0.5 cup Ricotta cheese optional, for creaminess
  • 0.5 cup Pizza sauce or marinara plus extra for dipping
  • 1 Egg large, beaten for egg wash
  • Olive oil spray for greasing
For Fillings (Customizable)
  • 0.25 cup Pepperoni sliced thin, per calzone
  • 0.5 cup Italian sausage cooked and crumbled
  • Bell peppers sautéed, optional
  • Onions sautéed, optional

Equipment

  • Air Fryer,
  • Rolling Pin
  • Mixing bowl

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. If using refrigerated dough, let it sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes if needed.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough piece into a rough circle or oval, about 7 inches in diameter. Leave a one-inch border clear around the edges.
  3. Place 1-2 tablespoons of marinara sauce on one side of the dough. Top with mozzarella, ricotta if using, and your choice of fillings like pepperoni and cooked sausage.
  4. Lightly moisten the edges of the dough with water or egg wash. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges firmly to seal, then crimp with a fork.
  5. Brush the entire surface with the beaten egg wash. Cut two small slits on the top for vents.
  6. Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray. Place 2 calzones in the basket (cook in batches if necessary). Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 10-14 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove and let rest for 2 minutes. Serve with extra marinara dipping sauce.
