Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm milk 105-115°F (40-46°C)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 large egg lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Wooden spoon or dough hook
  • stand mixer (optional),
  • 9x13-inch baking dish,
  • Plastic Wrap or Kitchen Towel
  • oven

Method

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let stand for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy to activate the yeast.
  2. Add melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture. Whisk until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the flour and salt to the wet ingredients, mixing with a wooden spoon or dough hook until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 6-8 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead in a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough to release the air. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball.
  7. Place the rolls in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise for 30-45 minutes, or until puffy.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Remove from oven and brush with remaining melted butter. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For a dairy-free option, use almond milk and vegan butter. You can also substitute whole wheat flour for up to half of the all-purpose flour for a nuttier flavor. Avoid over-kneading for soft rolls and ensure a warm environment for proper rising.
