Classic Strawberry Danish

A classic Danish pastry filled with sweet strawberry cream and topped with a light glaze.

Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 2 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 cup Butter cold, cubed
  • 1 egg Egg room temperature
  • 1 tbsp Milk warm
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast
Filling
  • 8 oz Cream cheese softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 drop Almond extract
  • 2 cups Strawberries chopped
  • 2 tbsp Lemon juice

Method
 

Prepare the dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Add the cold cubed butter and mix until the butter is incorporated into the flour.
  3. Add the egg and warm milk to the flour mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough by hand for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Prepare the filling
  1. In a separate bowl, whip the cream cheese, sugar, vanilla extract, and almond extract until light and fluffy.
  2. In a pan, simmer the chopped strawberries with sugar and lemon juice until they thicken into a compote.
Assemble the Danish
  1. Roll the dough out into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
  2. Place a dollop of the cream cheese mixture in the center, followed by a spoonful of the strawberry compote.
  3. Fold the corners of the dough toward the center to form a triangle.
  4. Place the pastries on a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Whisk together powdered sugar and a splash of milk to drizzle over the warm pastries.

Notes
