Ingredients

Pie Crust
  • 2 sheets refrigerated pie crust Store-bought or homemade
Apple Filling
  • 4 medium apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or favorite variety, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust to sweetness preference
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour Helps thicken filling
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Adds warmth and spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg Complements cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter Adds richness to filling
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Brightens flavor, prevents browning
Frying
  • vegetable oil For frying, enough to fill pan 1-2 inches deep
  • powdered sugar For dusting, optional

Equipment

  • Large skillet,
  • Rolling Pin
  • 3-inch round cookie cutter
  • Large heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet
  • Thermometer
  • Slotted spoon,

Method

  1. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add diced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, about 8-10 minutes until apples are tender and filling thickened. Remove from heat and cool slightly.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, unfold one sheet of pie crust. Roll out gently to slightly thin it.
  3. Cut out 3-inch circles from the pie crust using a cookie cutter or knife. Repeat with second sheet.
  4. Place a spoonful of apple filling in center of half the crust circles. Do not overfill.
  5. Cover filling with remaining pie crust circles. Press edges with a fork to seal tightly.
  6. Heat vegetable oil in a large heavy-bottomed pot or deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Use thermometer to monitor.
  7. Carefully fry pies in batches, 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd pan.
  8. Remove pies with slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar while warm, if desired.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy alone or with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

Optionally brush pies with egg wash before frying for a golden crust and sprinkle coarse sugar for crunch. Try different apple varieties or fruit substitutions like peaches or berries. Create vegan or gluten-free versions with ingredient swaps.
