HOMEMADE SLOPPY JOES

A classic American sloppy joes recipe that brings everyone to the table with messy hands and big smiles. This easy 20-minute recipe reminds me of my own childhood, yet it feels entirely new every time I share it with my family.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ground beef 80/20 or 90/10 lean ratio
  • 1 medium Yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 medium Green bell pepper finely diced
  • 3 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 cup Ketchup
  • 1 cup Tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • to taste Salt and black pepper
  • 4 large Hamburger buns

Equipment

  • Large skillet,
  • Wooden spoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • - Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Place your large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Listen for that satisfying sizzle. As the meat browns, you are building layers of flavor. Drain the excess fat, leaving just a teaspoon in the pan for the vegetables.
  2. Add the finely diced yellow onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté them until the onions are translucent and the peppers are tender. Add the garlic in the last minute, stirring constantly so it becomes fragrant without scorching.
  3. Turn the heat down to medium-low. Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and black pepper to your liking.
  4. Let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the sauce to thicken and the flavors to marry. If it gets too thick, add a splash of water or beef broth.
  5. While the meat simmers, melt a little butter in another pan. Toast your hamburger buns until they are crisp and golden brown.

Notes

For a spicy variation, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a few chopped jalapeños. For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey for the ground beef. To prevent soggy buns, always toast them until they form a golden crust.
