Ingredients

Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 cup whole milk warm
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
Filling
  • 8 oz cream cheese full fat
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • loaf pan,
  • oven

Method

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk with a tablespoon of sugar and the yeast. Let it sit for about ten minutes until frothy.
  2. Add melted butter, eggs, and the remaining sugar. Gradually stir in the flour to form a dough.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a warm towel, and let it rise in a draft-free spot for about an hour.
Prepare the Filling
  1. While the dough rises, beat the cream cheese with sugar, vanilla, and a dash of cinnamon until smooth.
Assemble the Cake
  1. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread the cream cheese filling across the surface, leaving a small border.
  2. Roll the dough up like a jelly roll. To get the traditional New Orleans king cake look, join the ends to form a circle.
  3. Place the shaped cake in a greased loaf pan and let it rise for another forty-five minutes.
Bake and Decorate
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slide the cake into the preheated oven and bake until it is a beautiful golden brown.
  2. Once cooled slightly, pour over the cream cheese frosting. While the icing is still wet, invite the family to help with the colored sugars.
