Ingredients

Ground Beef Ingredient Group
  • 1 lb 1 80/20 lean ratio
  • 1 Yellow Onion diced
  • 1 Green Bell Pepper diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
Sauce Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup Ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
  • 1 tbsp Yellow Mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1/4 cup Water or Beef Broth if needed to thin sauce
  • 1 tsp Salt to taste
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper to taste
Assembly
  • 8 Soft Hamburger Buns toasted
  • 2 tbsp Butter for toasting buns

Equipment

  • Large skillet,
  • Wooden spoon

Method

Brown the Beef
  1. Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it into small crumbles using a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the skillet.
Sauté the Aromatics
  1. Add the diced onion and green bell pepper to the skillet. Sauté for 5 minutes until the onions are translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Build the Sauce
  1. Stir in the tomato paste, coating the beef and vegetables. Add the ketchup, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and black pepper.
Simmer to Perfection
  1. Add water or beef broth if the mixture is too thick. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
Serve
  1. While the sauce simmers, toast the hamburger buns with butter in a separate skillet or toaster. Assemble by spooning the sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted buns.
