Equipment

  • Medium saucepan,
  • serving dish

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 12 ounces fresh or frozen cranberries (frozen is perfectly fine)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (or substitute with maple syrup or honey for sugar-free)
  • 1 cup orange juice (freshly squeezed preferred)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest (from about 1 large orange)
  • pinch salt
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional, for added texture and flavor)

Instructions

  • Combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, orange zest, and salt in a medium saucepan.
  • Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cranberries burst and sauce thickens to desired consistency, stirring occasionally.
  • Note that the sauce will thicken more as it cools; don’t worry if it looks a little thin initially.
  • Stir in chopped nuts if using, during the last few minutes of cooking.
  • Remove from heat and let sauce cool completely before serving or storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Notes

Adjust sweetness as desired after simmering. Add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for warmth. Add other fruits like apples or pears for variety. Perfect for vegan and gluten-free diets by substituting sweeteners accordingly.
