- Combine cranberries, sugar, orange juice, water, orange zest, and salt in a medium saucepan.
- Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cranberries burst and sauce thickens to desired consistency, stirring occasionally.
- Note that the sauce will thicken more as it cools; don’t worry if it looks a little thin initially.
- Stir in chopped nuts if using, during the last few minutes of cooking.
- Remove from heat and let sauce cool completely before serving or storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
