Skull Cake: Easy Halloween Baking with Creamy Frosting!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 box cake mix chocolate, vanilla, or red velvet
  • as required eggs as per cake mix instructions
  • as required oil as per cake mix instructions
  • as required water or milk as per cake mix instructions; milk adds richness
  • 2 containers frosting vanilla, chocolate, or cream cheese; white frosting recommended if planning to dye
  • gel food coloring black, white, or other colors for decorating
  • optional decorations sprinkles, candy eyes, chocolate shavings, edible glitter

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a skull-shaped cake pan.
  2. Prepare the cake mix according to package instructions, using eggs, oil, and water or milk.
  3. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Cool the cake in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  5. Apply a thin layer of frosting (crumb coat) to seal in crumbs. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set.
  6. Apply a second, thicker layer of frosting to the entire cake. Smooth with a spatula.
  7. Use gel food coloring to tint portions of the frosting. Decorate the cake with piping bags, candy eyes, and optional decorations.
  8. Refrigerate the decorated cake for at least 30 minutes to allow the frosting to set before serving.

Notes

For a vegan version, use a vegan cake mix, vegan frosting, and substitute eggs with applesauce or flax eggs. To create a more gory effect, add edible blood gel or red food coloring.
