Crescent Roll Dough
  • 2 (8-ounce) cans refrigerated crescent roll dough can substitute with pre-made puff pastry or biscuit dough
  • 1 cup pizza sauce use marinara or seasoned tomato paste as substitutes
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese can substitute with Italian cheeses, provolone, or cheddar
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning substitute with dried oregano, basil, and garlic powder mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese nutritional yeast can be used for dairy-free option
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for brushing dough before baking

  • black olives sliced or whole for eyes and nose
  • bell pepper strips for teeth or other features
  • fresh parsley or basil for garnish

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly flour your work surface.
  2. Unroll both cans of crescent roll dough and press seams to form two large rectangles. Overlap edges and press to create one extra-large rectangle.
  3. Spread pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border. Sprinkle Italian seasoning and garlic powder over the sauce.
  4. Layer shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the sauce. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  5. Roll dough tightly from one long side into a compact log. Pinch seam and tuck ends to seal.
  6. Slice dough log into 1.5-inch thick rounds (about 12-14 pieces). Arrange on baking sheet in shape of a skull, pressing sides together slightly.
  7. Optional: Use knife or cookie cutter to indent eye sockets and nose before baking for a defined skull shape.
  8. Brush the assembled skull with olive oil (optionally mixed with garlic powder or Italian seasoning).
  9. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown, puffed, and cheese is bubbly.
  10. Remove from oven, decorate eyes with black olives, add bell pepper strips as teeth. Let cool 5-10 minutes before serving warm with extra sauce for dipping.
