Ingredients
Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup. If you are using frozen Texas Toast, remove the slices from the packaging now.
- In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt the butter or heat the olive oil. Add the ground beef and break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until it is completely browned and no pink remains, about 6-8 minutes. Drain off any excess grease thoroughly.
- Reduce the heat to medium. Add the diced onion (and the green bell pepper, if using) to the skillet. Sauté until the onions are soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. Push the vegetables to the side, or add the minced garlic and cook for about 60 seconds until fragrant.
- Pour in the ketchup, optional BBQ sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well to combine all ingredients with the ground beef. Add the water or stock to loosen the sauce slightly. Season generously with salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat and let the sloppy joe filling simmer for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally. This allows the flavors to truly meld and the sauce to thicken slightly. The ultimate texture should be spreadable but not soupy.
- Place the garlic Texas Toast slices directly onto the prepared baking sheet. Since you are making this an open face texas toast sloppy joe, it’s only necessary to bake the toast that will support the filling.
- Scoop a generous amount of the warm sloppy joe mixture onto each slice of Texas Toast, spreading it right to the edges. Don’t be shy, but don't overload it so much that it slides off the edge.
- Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the top of the meat mixture on each texas toast sloppy joe.
- Bake in the preheated 400°F oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling, melted, and slightly golden brown, and the edges of the Texas Toast are beautifully crispy. Keep a close eye on them to prevent burning due to the high fat content of the garlic butter.
- Carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. Let them cool just slightly before transferring to plates. Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh parsley if you like, and serve immediately. Prepare for the cheers of satisfaction!

Notes
These Sloppy Joes are best served immediately, while the Texas Toast is still crispy and the cheese is melted and gooey. You can easily customize the recipe by using ground turkey or chicken instead of beef, or by adding a pinch of red pepper flakes for a spicy kick. The filling can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.
