Equipment

  • Sandwich press (optional but ideal for grilling)
  • Knife for slicing bread and vegetables
  • Pan or skillet for grilling
  • Spoon for spreading condiments

Ingredients

  • 1 bolillo or telera roll Mexican-style bread
  • 3 slices ham
  • 3 slices turkey
  • 2 slices chorizo
  • 1 breaded chicken breast or beef milanesa optional
  • 2 slices Oaxaca cheese or queso asadero melted cheese
  • ½ avocado sliced
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • Lettuce shredded
  • 2-3 pickled jalapeños or chipotle peppers
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • Refried beans optional for added texture

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bread: Slice the bolillo or telera roll in half. Optionally, scoop out some of the interior of the bread for extra room for fillings.
  • Spread Condiments: Spread mayonnaise and mustard on both sides of the bread.
  • Layer Ingredients: Add a layer of meats (ham, turkey, chorizo, milanesa) on the bottom. Top with cheese, avocado slices, tomato, lettuce, and pickled jalapeños.
  • Add Beans (optional): Spread a thin layer of refried beans on the top half of the bread.
  • Grill the Sandwich: Press the sandwich in a sandwich press, or grill it on a skillet with a heavy lid for 3-5 minutes, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  • Serve and Enjoy: Slice and serve immediately.

Notes

Meat Variations: You can swap the meats to suit dietary preferences (e.g., vegan options with tofu or tempeh, or a seafood version with shrimp or fish).
Bread: The bread is crucial to the sandwich's success. If you can’t find bolillo or telera rolls, use any crusty roll that can hold up to the fillings.
Grilling: For a crispier sandwich, using a sandwich press or grilling on a pan is key to melding the flavors together.
