Valentine Brookies

Ingredients
  

For the Brownie Layer
  • 1 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
For the Cookie Layer
  • 1 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup Valentine M&Ms
  • 1/4 cup heart sprinkles

Equipment

Method
 

Prepare the Brownie Layer
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter and sugar. Add the eggs and vanilla extract, then whisk until smooth.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, salt, and flour to the bowl. Stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  3. Spread the brownie batter evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan.
Prepare the Cookie Layer
  1. Mix in the egg and vanilla extract.
  2. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the cookie mixture. Once the dough forms, fold in the chocolate chips and half of the Valentine M&Ms.
  3. Using your hands, break off small clumps of dough and drop them over the top of the brownie batter. Press the remaining M&Ms and heart sprinkles into the top of the cookie dough clumps.
Bake and Cool
  1. Let the brookies cool completely in the pan before slicing. This ensures clean cuts.
