Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 9 cups Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1.5 to 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup Valentine M&Ms (red, pink, and white)
  • 1/2 cup festive heart sprinkles

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • microwave-safe bowl,
  • Large Rubber Spatula
  • Gallon Sized Plastic Bag
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

Step by Step Instructions
  1. Measure out your cereal into a very large mixing bowl. You want enough room to stir without crushing the delicate squares.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, combine your chocolate chips, creamy peanut butter, and butter. Heat this on high for 1 minute, then stir. Continue heating in 30 second increments until the mixture is completely smooth and glossy.
  3. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the cereal. Use a large rubber spatula to gently fold the cereal until every single piece is well coated. Be gentle!
  5. Place your powdered sugar into a large gallon sized plastic bag. Carefully pour the chocolate covered cereal into the bag. Seal it tight, leaving a bit of air inside.
  6. Shake the bag vigorously until the cereal is evenly coated with white sugar.
  7. Spread the mixture out onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool. While it is still slightly tacky, toss in your candies and sprinkles.
  8. Let it sit for about 15 minutes to set before serving or packaging.

Notes

To ensure your Valentine's Day Muddy Buddies turn out perfect every time, keep these tips in mind. First, always use fresh powdered sugar to avoid clumps. If your sugar seems lumpy, sift it before adding it to the bag. Second, do not skimp on the cooling time. Serving it too early results in a messy hand, though some might argue that is half the fun!
