Method
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Slice your loaf lengthwise to create two halves or make diagonal cuts across the top, keeping the bottom crust intact for pull-apart garlic bread.
- Soften 1/2 cup of unsalted butter either by letting it sit at room temperature or microwaving for 10-15 seconds until pliable, not melted. Peel and finely mince 8-10 cloves of fresh garlic.
- In a medium bowl, mix softened butter, minced garlic, 2 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, and optional pinch of red pepper flakes. If using Parmesan, stir in 1/4 cup grated cheese now.
- Place cut bread halves on the prepared baking sheet, cut side up. Generously spread the garlic butter mixture evenly over the bread surface, making sure to cover all nooks and crannies.
- Bake covered (optionally tent with foil) at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to infuse and butter to melt.
- Remove foil if used, bake uncovered for an additional 5-8 minutes until edges are golden and crispy. Optionally broil last 1-2 minutes watching carefully to achieve a golden top without burning.
- Remove from oven, garnish with extra fresh parsley if desired. Allow to cool 1-2 minutes, then slice into portions and serve immediately.

Notes
Use crusty bread like French baguette or ciabatta for best texture, day-old bread works well for crispiness. Adjust garlic amount to taste and experiment with herbs or cheese for variations.
